When your baby comes home!

Parenting is a thrilling experience and you need to be fully prepared to handle it satisfactorily. You need to make sure that you have all the required supplies/material while getting your child home. It is also advisable to read and research on what needs to be done when bringing home your baby. Reading about labor, the first three months after the child is born, the ways to feed and nurture will help you prepare yourself and you will not be surprised at the last minute.

Here’s a checklist of things that you need to carry to the hospital. These will be required when getting your child home for the first time after birth.

  • Carry a nightgown and slippers apart from the usual footwear
  • Other toiletries like soaps, tooth brush and paste
  • Set of clothes that can be used while returning home from the hospital
  • Set of clothes for the new born baby while getting him/her home for the first time
  • Blankets, shawls and sweaters depending on the weather
  • Brest feeding equipment
  • Wipes and napkins to clean if required

It is also important to have supplies stored at home once the baby arrives. Make sure that you have all baby care products in place along with the essentials required for the mother’s well-being. Mothers will be busy with the baby all the time leaving little or no room for cooking and cleaning. And anyway a new mother is not expected to do that, rather she should not, as her body will be weakened by the efforts that went into delivering the child. So ensure that there is a family member or hired help to take care of these things side by side. Mothers who breast feed their new-born babies need nutrition on a large scale. So it is essential to have meals and snacks ready. This will ensure that the child also is fed well. Also mothers need to wear clean clothes at all times since they breast feed the baby creating constant skin contact between the two. Hire help for laundry so that you have freshly laundered clothes ready to use. Keep books providing baby care advice handy, in case you need any information regarding the same. You can not rely on external advice completely because taking care of a child is a learning experience and you will understand the requirements of your child gradually. As every toddler is unique, general rules may or may not apply.

Trying traditional methods along with newer ones to take care of your child can be a good idea. At the end of the day, the smile on your baby’s face will make everything worthwhile. Happy parenting!!!
