The best food for infants is most definitely breast milk. Baby food can be started when the child needs extra dietary supplements or when breast feeding has been discontinued, either out of choice or due to some other unavoidable factors such as drying up of mammary glands. The ideal age to introduce baby food is around 6 months. There can be other signals like the baby displaying an interest in foods other than that being offered or increased physical activity. During the early stages of the introduction of baby food, it is advisable to supervise the child strictly since there are chances of choking on the food. One of the best ways to avoid choking hazards is to mash all foods well so that the child can just taste and swallow. It is advisable to discuss the various aspects of baby food with your pediatrician before you decide on a particular form of diet.
While selecting baby formula take special care to notice that all vital vitamins, proteins, iron fats and sugar are being included. Consult your pediatrician and make a check list of what nutrients need to be a part of your child’s regular diet considering known allergies and other health issues, if any. Once you begin feeding the baby food, check if it is being digested well. In case the baby vomits or is irritable due to formation of gas then you may need to change the formula. The symptom of vomiting is the most dangerous of all so consult your doctor right away if it happens even once. Feeding powdered formulas or canned ready-to-use formulas is a convenient option but you always need to check for signs of discomfort in your child. If there are no such problems then you may continue using the same formula as switching frequently is not advisable. In case you are feeding your baby food prepared and mashed at home, then do not add salt as it is harmful for your child’s digestive parts. These may include vegetable or fruit preparations. Choose vegetables and fruits grown using less pesticides. If your budget provides for it, buy organic vegetables and fruits. Cook the ingredients well so that your child has no trouble digesting the same.
Home made baby food
All babies up to 6 months invariably should be fed breast milk as it is vital for their mental, physical and physiological development. Baby food should be introduced later when the child is ready for newer foods and feeding techniques. The other reason why baby food may be introduced early is problems in breast feeding, as mentioned earlier. Making your own baby food after careful selection of ingredients and appropriate cooking is a safer option than buying ready made foods. The best part of home-made baby food is the absence of preservatives. This will also introduce the child to healthy eating habits from a very young age. The chance of contracting allergies is lowered with home-made foods.
Introduction of baby food can be fruitful after careful deliberation on the varied factors mentioned above. Choose wisely for a cheerful and healthy baby in your arms! Happy parenting!!!
